Palmetto, FL –August 13, 2019 – Manatee County Animal Services (MCAS) announced that it will join with News Channel 8 WFLA to host Clear the Shelters fifth annual nationwide pet adoption drive on Saturday, August 17. On this day, MCAS will offer waived pet adoption fees as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters initiative that seeks to help families find and adopt homeless pets. Since 2015, Clear the Shelters has resulted in more than 256,688 pet adoptions nationwide.

Manatee County residents are required to license their new pet for an additional $20 tag fee. All pets will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped.

The Palmetto Adoption Center and Shelter, located at 305 25th Street West in Palmetto, will be open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Manatee County Cat Town, located at 216 6th Avenue East, Bradenton, 34208, will be open from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. The adoption fee special applies to all pets at this location. Animal Services can be reached at 941-742-5933. All adoptable pets can be viewed at mymanatee.org/pets

NBC (WFLA News Channel 8) and Telemundo stations all across the country will join with hundreds of animal shelters to help families find and adopt a new pet. The effort also raises awareness about the importance of pet adoption and the overcrowding issues that local animal shelters typically experience in the summer months because of spring litters.

MCAS is Manatee County’s only open-admission shelter facility, taking in an average of 15 animals per day in 2018. The mission of MCAS is to maintain public health and safety through the enforcement of laws and ordinances related to animals, to promote responsible pet ownership, promote adoptions, and reduce pet overpopulation. In July, MCAS had a 96% save rate.
